Multi-language shopping experience for international consumers

(BEIJING, May 12) — The ninth session of an activity hosted by BOCOG opened on Monday at the Beijing Modern Plaza, which focused on the service sector’s ability to serve shoppers as the Olympics approach.

Nearly 100 domestic and international reporters were at the scene of the activity, speaking to service personnel and customers and experiencing first hand the barrier-free capabilities of the shopping area. Neither language nor physical obstacles stood in the way of their interviews.

In the past three years, service personnel at the Beijing Modern Plaza have undergone training to ensure that visitors who are interested in shopping here will not encounter any problems. As such, the mall is English-friendly, physically equipped to welcome persons with disabilities, and technologically capable of accepting international credit/debit cards as a form of payment.

Not only were reporters interested in the activity, crowds of shoppers came by to check out the action as well, telling reporters that the services provided were exceptional.

According to a representative of the shopping plaza, although English was the language most emphasized during training, many service personnel can also communicate in Italian, French, Japanese, and Russian, among other languages. Some employees are also well-versed in sign language.
